Welcome a dog in a home already sheltering a cat

If your new dog arrives in a home where a cat already lives, they will need time to trust each other.

Dogs are often easy friends, and if they have to live with another dog, your puppy will most likely enjoy being with other dogs. In fact, he will probably take every opportunity to play with another animal, big or small!

As with all your puppy's new experiences, it's important to introduce it to other animals with caution, so that their friendship starts on a good foundation.

Present your new dog to your cat or kitten

The most important aspect when presenting a puppy to a cat is safety. Dogs can get excited very easily when in contact with cats, so it can take time for them to learn to get along! If your dog continues to get excited or aggressive in the presence of your cat after several attempts at presentation, seek professional advice from your veterinarian and contact a specialized canine behaviorist who can help your animals live together.

If your new puppy or dog is relaxed and comfortable in his new home, it's time to introduce him to your cat. You will need to be patient and give your cat time to get used to his new companion, especially if your cat has never lived with a dog before! It is common for cats to react to the presence of a new dog by whistling or pawing at him or trying to escape by running or hiding.

  • Presenting a puppy to a cat may seem a bit impressive, so your task is to help both animals relax when they are in each other's presence. Make sure your cat or kitten is in a safe place where the dog will not reach it and keep your dog on a leash.

  • Reward your dog if he is calm and, even if he barks excitedly, stay calm.

  • After about five minutes, move the dog away and let your cat leave the room to take a break.

  • Introduce them in brief meetings of a few minutes each time, in different rooms, several times a day so that they get used to seeing each other and to feel in the whole house. Keep your dog on a leash.

  • Once the animals are calm and relaxed, let your cat get out of the shelter, keeping your dog on the leash. Let them discover each other and be sure to give them a lot of love and affection if they tolerate themselves! Remember to stay calm if one of them shows signs of discontent. Organize frequent meetings in as many rooms of the house as possible.

  • Watch them until you are sure that they are accepting and do not detach your dog before being sure he will not have a bad reaction and that he will not try to chase your cat. Make sure your cat has access to places out of reach of the dog and that he can escape if he does not feel comfortable.

  • Separate cats and dogs during meals so that they can eat comfortably without any risk that one steals food from the other. Choose your puppy's food in the first few months, it should become more serene and let your cat dine peacefully.

  • Place the litter of the cat in a place easily accessible for him but out of reach of your dog. This may not be pleasant to hear, but your dog may follow his instinct and he will want to eat the contents!

  • Make sure your cat has the ability to hunt and chase mobile toys so that your dog can rest without fear of a cat watching.

  • Do not worry if your dog and cat do not become the best friends in the world. The cat is often naturally independent and can simply ignore your dog, even if he has accepted his presence. Over time, most cats and dogs that live together become friends, although it is often the cat who decides! As long as they each have their own space, with places out of the dog's reach for the cat, everything should be fine.
